چکیده

The angular power spectrum estimator developed by Peebles (1973) and Hauser & Peebles (1973) has been modified and applied to the 4 year maps produced by the COBE DMR. The power spectrum of the observed sky has been compared to the power spectra of a large number of simulated random skies produced with noise equal to the observed noise and primordial density fluctuation power spectra of power law form, with P (k) ∝ k. The best fitting value of the spectral index in the range of spatial scales corresponding to spherical harmonic indices 3 ≤ l ∼< 30 is an apparent spectral index napp = 1.13 +0.3 −0.4 which is consistent with the Harrison-Zel’dovich primordial spectral index npri = 1 The best fitting amplitude for napp = 1 is 〈Q 2 RMS〉 0.5 = 18 μK.

Anisotropy in the Cosmic Microwave Background at Degree Angular Scales: Python V Results

Observations of the microwave sky using the Python telescope in its fifth season of operation at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica are presented. The system consists of a 0.75 m offaxis telescope instrumented with a HEMT amplifier-based radiometer having continuum sensitivity from 37-45 GHz in two frequency bands. With a 0.91 × 1.02 beam the instrument fully sampled 598 deg of...

Band Power Spectra in the COBE DMR 4-Year Anisotropy Maps

We employ a pixel-based likelihood technique to estimate the angular power spectrum of the COBE Differential Microwave Radiometer (DMR) 4-year sky maps. The spectrum is consistent with a scale-invariant power-law form with a normalization, expressed in terms of the expected quadrupole anisotropy, of Qrms−PS|n=1 = 18 ± 1.4 μK, and a best-fit spectral index of 1.2 ± 0.3. The normalization is some...

A Bayesian estimate of the skewness of the Cosmic Microwave Background

We propose a formalism for estimating the skewness and angular power spectrum of a general Cosmic Microwave Background data set. We use the Edgeworth Expansion to define a non-Gaussian likelihood function that takes into account the anisotropic nature of the noise and the incompleteness of the sky coverage. The formalism is then applied to estimate the skewness of the publicly available 4 year ...

Generalised Inflation with a Gravitational Wave Background

We propose a Λ-inflation model which explains a significant part of the COBE signal by primordial cosmic gravitational waves. The primordial density perturbations fulfill both the constraints of large-scale microwave background and galaxy cluster normalization. The model is tested against the galaxy cluster power spectrum and the high-multipole angular CMB anisotropy.
